Fern Resort Pictures and Stories:

Pictures of a visit to Killarney Mountain Lodge are available in the Mountain Lodge picture gallery.

My family and I arrived at Killarney Mountain Lodge on Sunday and spent most of the day simply relaxing and enjoying the peacefulness of our new surroundings. The lodge was set out in the East end of Killarney, on a big well kept piece of property. I must first clarify when I say well kept property, the lawn, gardens and overall property was amazingly kept, especially for the size of it. During our stay we had the pleasure of walking around the grounds on a few occasions and noticed the grounds were immaculately kept. Everything from the grass to the gardens were perfectly taken care of. We were overly impressed with how clean and maintained the grounds were.

After checking in and meeting Mr. East the lodge owner, we went to our cabin located in a quiet setting at the back of the lodge property. Since we had the kids with us, the seclusion came in very handy, especially with the baby. One of the most surprising things about the lodge was the availability of a crib for the baby. When I first spoke to Mr. East he asked if I wanted an extra cot or crib to be put into the cabin for our use. The crib was a fantastic idea and very convenient. Upon entering the cottage / cabin we were glad to notice that it was very spacious and well kept. One of the most impressive things we noticed was the bedding. You would not think bedding would be a top priority when on vacation, but I tell you something when your head hits this big, soft fluffy pillow and cover up with a huge down filled duvet, you know you are about to have a fantastic sleep and sure enough we all had a relaxing and comfortable sleep.

As the evening came around we headed for the lodge dining room. As we entered we were pleased to find everything clean and elegantly set out. For our first meal I ordered a Caesar salad as an appetizer and a 10 ounce steak, baked potato and vegetables for the main course. My wife started with the Caesar salad as well and the homemade seafood salad for the entree. The kids ate chicken fingers and fries. It was great to see the kids eating something without complaining. As a matter of fact if I remember correctly both kids had the same thing every night, while the wife and I tried various different meals. We did not feel like going through the hassle of convincing the kids to try something new or different :) If you have kids you know where we are coming from. The meal was nothing short of fantastic. Everything was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing. I would like to point out that the Caesar salad was homemade and fantastic. I have never seen a Caesar dressing that was not white in color until I ate at the Mountain Lodge. The Caesar dressing was a yellowish brown in color and it was delicious. After our meal we were pleasantly surprised with our dessert of cake and ice cream.

Mr. East notified me that he had made arrangements for our family to go out to a secluded lake for the day of fishing and entertainment for the whole family. In the morning we had a 15-20 minute drive to meet up with recreation staff Rebecca (nickname Rec) and Stew. With a short boat ride we arrived at the island to find a very large lodge and a few smaller cabins. After arriving we had a beverage and got to know Stew and Rec, they were both very polite and friendly. After our drink Stew and I set out to check out the fishing on the lake. Our plan was to stick around the island and come back for lunch in about an hour, then head back out. During the first hour Stew and I caught a couple fish each, then headed back for lunch. We had freshly made hamburgers and home fries cooked on a huge outdoor brick BBQ. After lunch the kids went swimming, canoeing and played on the island, while Stew and I went back out fishing. We fished from about 2-6pm and had a fantastic day and caught loads of fish. The water was so crystal clear we could see Bass swimming all over the place. Every 2-3 casts if we did not catch a fish, we could see them following our lures up to the boat. With all the fish we caught, it was not hard to understand why they kept this place a secret and used it only for guests of the lodge. As well I was told that the ministry has been stocking the lake with Bass for the past few years. This secluded honey hole held large volumes of smallmouth bass, that were easy to find and catch.

After a successful day of fishing, we met back at the island and all got in the boat and headed back to our vehicle. On the drive out from the lake my wife pointed out that she saw 2 moose along the river that ran beside the road. I stopped the vehicle, grabbed the camera and jumped out to see these magnificent creatures. You would not believe it, not only was there a HUGE mother moose but about 10 feet away from her was her baby. This was the first time I had ever seen a live moose in the wild and it was simply breathtaking. I walked down the side of this small hill to the river bed and directly across the river on the bank of the other side was these 2 moose. I would have to say they were at the most 20-30 yards away from us, just watching us seeing what we were doing,. I snapped picture after picture just to make sure I had proof of this rare view.

If you look off to the left you will see the baby.

Telling our moose story back at the lodge, I come to find out that it is very rare to see a mother and baby together, that did not take off at the first sight of humans. If you have never seen a moose before, all I can say is it was simply amazing. You would not believe how big the mother was. She had to of stood over 7 feet tall, with a head on her that was twice as big as any horse I have ever seen. Locals say that seeing moose is a regular thing in the area, except rarely with a baby. There are a couple more pictures and a video of this spectacular sighting, although the video does not have a clear shot of this mammoth moose it give you an idea of how close I really was to them.

After a short drive, we arrived back at Killarney Mountain Lodge. During the evening I decided to take a quiet walk around the lodge property. During my walk I had the pleasure of seeing one of the local foxes walking by on the path. He was about 30 meters away and did not mind that I was watching him. As a matter of fact when I started following him, all he did was look at me and keep walking, he did not even try to run away. I guess he knew I was not there to harm him. I followed him for a couple minutes to the end of the path where he went of into the bush and I lost sight of him. I went back to the cabin to get my camera, just in case I happen to see this cute little fox again. I was hoping I could see him again and get close enough to him to get a picture. Keep in mind it is now around 11pm and very dark outside and my camera does not have infrared capabilities, unfortunately. After getting the camera I started walking down the path towards the pool and recreation area and sure enough what do I see, the fox. He was sitting about 3 feet away from the path cleaning himself. I quickly and quietly pulled my camera out of the case and turned it on. The first picture set of a flash that startled the fox, yet he did not move. I slowly moved closer so I could get the picture and sure enough he started to move away. I tried snapping a picture of him as he was leaving but it was too dark and by now he was too far away for the flash to work well enough to actually take the picture. Upon closer examination of the pictures I took, I noticed that I was able to get his eyes glowing from the flash. OK not the greatest picture but it sure was cool to see him, with or without the picture. Here is a small version of the picture, as you can see those two little white lights are his eyes, the picture gallery shows the larger version. I went to the lounge and told my fox story and came to find out that there is a local man who feeds this fox and he has actually been in the guys house. It has been said that he has fed the fox by hand, but has not touched him.

That evening I noticed a few people playing pool and ping pong in the rec room. The rec room is open 24hours a day for the guests convenience. The rec room was clean and well kept up, with newer pool and ping pong tables. The best part was the lodge had installed sound proofing to the room, so guests playing late at night would not disturb other guests that may be sleeping. Surprising enough once you are about 10 feet down the path away from the rec room, you could not hear anything coming from the room. The rec room offered various types of games such as billiards, ping pong and shuffleboard. Some of the outdoor activities available include horseshoes, volleyball, badminton, bocci, chess and even lawn croquet. This does not include the swimming pool and sauna facilities located beside the rec room. The pool is kept covered with a solar blanket to keep the pool from getting debris in it, as well as keep the temperature up. While I was looking around a gentleman offered to have a game of ping pong with me. Although I have not played in years I gracefully accepted his challenge. Well, needless to say he was a better player than I was and he kicked my butt :). The next day Jody (my wife) and I played a few games of ping pong as well. it was Jody's first time playing and she loved the game so much, that we will be getting our own ping pong table. (What the wife wants, the wife gets.)

The Fishing

The fishing in Georgian Bay / Lake Huron was fantastic. Besides having a fantastic day at the lodge's secret lake that I mentioned earlier in this review, I had the opportunity to go out fishing with Steve Tyson again on Wednesday. When Steve is not fishing he works for the lodge doing most of the mechanical repairs. Since, I had already experienced what it was like to fish with Steve previously, I was very excited about spending another day with him. We headed out about 8am, both ready for another fantastic day of fishing. While I was going fishing the rest of the family was invited out on a sailboat ride, on a 46 foot sailboat. Since I had taken many fishing pictures previously, my wife decided to take the camera with her on the boat. Moving on to the fishing. Arriving at our first fishing hole, we started catching fish right away. Not just any fish we were catching the big boys right off the hop.  If I remember correctly our first fish was around 3.5lbs. About half hour later I caught a nice smalleye that tipped the scales at 4.14lbs, I smiled as I looked at Steve and said, well it looks like I will be the one catching the biggest fish again today :). He graciously smiled and kept fishing. A few minutes later I c aught another huge smallmouth Bass that weighed exactly 5lbs. You would not believe how big and strong he was, unfortunately I could not take a picture since the wife had the camera on her boating trip. Either way I smiled again at Steve stating that it was going to be hard for him to get the biggest fish now. Then about an hour later, Steve says "I got a good one on the line." His rod was bent in half with both hands tightly holding on, then out of the water this monster smallmouth came. It looked pretty big, I was not sure if it beat my 5lb'er from earlier but it sure was big. After fighting the fish for a few minutes he finally got it into the boat and placed it on the scale. You would not believe it, 5.1 lb smallmouth. He did not have to say a word, I knew that the extra .1 of a pound was enough to take the lead for the day. It was a beautiful fish and Steve just looked at me and smiled as he released it back into the lake. Now I really had my work set out for me to catch a bigger fish. Needless to say Steve's 5.1lb'er was the biggest of the day. Around noon we seen my family on a beach taking a break from the boat ride, with the rest of the boat crew and passengers. This was a great time to retrieve the camera, so I can take photo's of the rest of the days fishing trip. As the day moved on Steve and I caught tons of big smallmouth Bass. I lost count of how many fish we actually caught that day, but I can say this, it was one of the best smallmouth fishing days I have ever had. Not including the 3 fish that tipped the scales around the 5lb mark, we caught atleast 6-8 smalley's over 4lbs, and atleast a dozen that weighed over 3lbs. I would say the average size smallmouth we caught that day had to be easily 3lbs+. It was a fabulous day of fishing. We called it a day around 5pm and headed back to the lodge, yes with Steve being victorious over me with his 5.1 lb'er. Congratulations Steve, you were the victorious one, this time, but I definitely will be back to try and regain the title ;-). I can see him smiling right now as he reads this. Steve was a great guy and it was a pleasure to go out with him. Steve was a very skilled fisherman and fishing guide and it was an honor to be able to fish with him.

Food / Dining:

Dining at Killarney Mountain Lodge, was a 5 star experience. The dining room was elegantly setup and everything seamed to be perfectly placed on the tables. The food was delicious and prepared to perfection. During our stay we had the pleasure of tasting some amazing dishes including their famous caesar salad, charbroiled steak, seafood salad, tasty back ribs that were so tender they fell off the bone as you picked them up, chicken fingers and fries (the kids favorite), french toast, pancakes, freshly garden omelet with cheese, vegetarian pie (similar to a keech), stuffed green peppers, sausage and eggs breakfast and many other amazing tasting meals. The wait staff were right on the ball when it came to the service. We had a very short wait time for our meals and it seamed like our waitress was able to read our minds, since every time we needed something she was right there ready to get whatever it was we needed. In my opinion it would be worth the 4 hour drive from Toronto just to come for a fantastic dinner experience.

Overview:

Our visit to Killarney Mountain Lodge was magnificent. The fishing was fantastic, the food was delicious, the staff were friendly and cater to all of our needs and the accommodations were as comfortable as home. We look forward to visiting Killarney Mountain Lodge again in the future and recommend it to everyone. One thing I forgot to mention earlier in the review was the decorating of the lodge, with a wooden log style exterior and brightly colored interiors gave the Mountain Lodge a unique modern appearance. Entering the sauna and washroom facilities I could not help but notice the brightly colored paint on the walls, that gives you a feeling happiness and energy. You would have to see it to understand what I am talking about. Pictures available in the Mountain Lodge picture gallery.
